About Us

The Haiti Nursing Foundation (HNF) was begun in 2005 to serve as a means to provide financial support to the school of nursing, Faculté des Sciences Infirmières [de Léogâne] l’Université Episcopale d’Haïti (Faculty of Nursing Science of the Episcopal University of Haiti or FSIL), and to provide funding for selected projects to improve nursing in Haiti.  Funds raised by HNF are primarily used for operational expenses and student support at FSIL:

Faculty and staff salaries   •    Tuition (scholarships)
Utilities and building maintenance  •    Uniforms, textbooks
Vehicles, gas, and maintenance    •    Room and board
Library books, Internet service, etc.   •    Transportation to clinical sites

The HNF was formed to facilitate a mechanism for churches and individual donors as well as foundations to provide funds to support the development of FSIL over the next several years.  In addition, funds are raised to assist other selected projects to improve nursing care in Haiti.

The HNF Board reviews requests for funding and makes decisions in order to select appropriate projects, monitors the expenditures of the FSIL on a quarterly basis to assure that the funds are being spent appropriately, and oversees the expenditures of any other approved Haiti nursing improvement projects.

HNF was incorporated February 8, 2005, in the State of Michigan by Ruth Barnard, Margie VanMeter, and Jerold Veldman. The Articles of Incorporation are available in the Legal & Financial section of this website.  Application was made to the Internal Revenue Service for tax-exempt status through the 501(c)(3) section and was approved retroactive to the incorporation date.

See School of Nursing in Haiti for more information on the FSIL School of Nursing in Haiti.
