Visitors to FSIL

In 2008 over two dozen groups and individuals visited FSIL from the U.S. Most were there to teach, while some took students for clinical experiences off campus, and others came as part of a student exchange.

Qualified medical professionals and nurse educators are needed to augment the nursing school faculty in Haiti. See Opportunities in Haiti for more information about visiting faculty and student exchanges.

The following letter is to FSIL Dean Hilda Alcindor and Governing Board Chair Donna Martsolf, PhD, RN, after a visit from Crown College students and Director of Nursing Tim Bristol, PhD, RN. Tim will return with more students in March, 2009. In the fall of 2009 three senior nursing students from Crown will spend the semester at FSIL. Exchanges like these instruct and enrich everyone involved.

Dear Hilda and Donna,

FSIL and Crown Students

FSIL and Crown Students

I really appreciate your support for the Haiti trip. It was an amazing experience. I took 8 nursing students and we had a great time.

The FSIL and Crown students were able to learn side-by-side. They did everything from physical assessment to sociology. They did clinicals together. They did Bible study together. They played together. They cried together. It was nothing like I have ever experienced before as a nurse educator. I have taken students to ‘practice’ in other cultures before, but the bonds that were formed here because of nursing student-to- nursing student relationships was amazing.

The students got to not only work with Haitian nursing students but also the community. With the help of Haitian students and staff, we saw over 450 patients in community clinics. We got to tour 4 different hospitals. We struggled in our hearts with the poverty and malnutrition that was everywhere. We experienced the peace of Christ even as the Voodoo drums beat strongly just next door.

This trip changed our lives and really encouraged us to pursue and serve the needy just as Christ did and just as the FSIL students do on a regular basis. We can’t wait to go back.

God Bless,
Tim Bristol, PhD, RN Crown College
