Sponsor a Student
Make a Difference in a Young Haitian’s Life

Charter class at capping ceremony, Faculté des Sciences Infirmières de l'Université Episcopale d'Haïti (FSIL)
Sponsoring a student for four years is a rewarding commitment! It is a chance to lend moral and financial support to a young man or woman whose life will be changed by this opportunity. In turn, as graduates of FSIL these young Haitian professionals will have an incalculable impact in their country. As a Student Sponsor you are assigned a first year nursing student at FSIL. Your student will provide a letter and photos at least twice yearly during his/her four-year program. If you decide to correspond with your student, you’re sure to find it an illuminating and heartwarming experience. For the students, it’s a wonderful way to practice their English, and lets them know someone is interested in them and their education.
Correspondence must follow content guidelines established by the Governing Board of the FSIL School of Nursing in their Policy on Donor-Student Relationships. To correspond with your student, please email the dean of FSIL, Hilda Alcindor, at halcindor@haitinursing.org with your student’s name in the subject line. Dean Alcindor will initiate the process.
Because mail service to Haiti is so unreliable, any letters should be mailed to your student c/o Haiti Nursing Foundation at the P.O. Box above. These will be hand delivered by Dean Alcindor or board members when they travel to Haiti.
Click on Students to view some third-year student letters and photos: they are inspiring! Remember that not all students will be this proficient in English, especially during their first two years at FSIL.
FSIL students who receive financial aid (as nearly all of them do) sign an agreement to work in Haiti as a nurse for at least two years after graduation or repay FSIL $10,000 U.S. dollars so that another student will have the same opportunity. At the completion of two years’ service they will receive their official diploma.
- With financial support of $3000 or more annually you are your student’s sole sponsor.
- With support of $500 to $2999 annually you may be sharing support of your student.
Tuition at FSIL is $800 per student each year; room and board, books, uniforms, and travel to clinical sites amount to an additional $2200.
As a Student Sponsor, your name will appear on a permanent donor plaque in the entry hall of the FSIL School of Nursing in Léogâne, Haïti. You will also receive an invitation to your student’s graduation.
(You are free to designate your donations for student support whether you take part in the Student Sponsorship Program or not.)
