Mission and Vision
FSIL Mission
The Faculty of Nursing Science shares the University’s commitment to teaching, research, and service and its recognition of the power of a Christian message in all we do. Our mission is to offer a professional program of study in nursing science, incorporating public health principles and practices, to prepare its graduates for effective health care service as clinicians, leaders and agents of change.
FSIL Vision
The program will provide its graduates with theoretical and clinical skills necessary for further professional education and growth, and an environment in which they can develop a desire for life-long learning and a passion for the ethical practice of nursing as a discipline of science, caring and compassion. The program will be an expression of nursing as a ministry of Jesus Christ where the spiritual dimension is an integral component along with teaching and healing.
Further, the School will provide continuing education and post baccalaureate education to meet the needs of the Haitian community. This includes the provision of professional service to the community and promotion of the nursing profession through scholarly activity.
5 –10 Year Long-Range Plan
- Identify core values of FSIL
- Expand the Educational Scope of FSIL and the Léogane area through the following:
Begin to offer degrees beyond the B.Sc., such as a Masters degree in Community Health Nursing.
Develop strategic plans for the development of an Educational Center for Health where programs of Continuing Education for multiple health care disciplines would reside, i.e.,- Medical doctors
- Nurses
- Medical lab technicians
- Biomedical repair and maintenance
- Physical therapy
- Hospital plant maintenance
- Develop educational health care programs for the residents of the Léogane region to promote good health practices
- Increase capacity to enroll more students in the bachelor’s program.
- Conduct research in the International Health field, which would benefit Haiti and the world
- Develop strong affiliations with international nursing organizations, such as the International Council of Nurses and the nursing honor society Sigma Theta Tau International.
- This could include an effort to strengthen the Haiti Nurses Association, which at present is not an active group and to establish a Haitian chapter of Sigma Theta Tau.
- Establish a Nursing Exchange Program between the United States and Haiti.
- Encourage the nursing students from FSIL to attend international nursing conferences.
- Develop a Strategic Plan so that 90% of the nursing graduates would continue to be practicing in Haiti 5 years after graduation. This plan would include having the following goals:
Have five graduates of FSIL strategically placed in leadership roles in Haiti such as: working in the Haitian Health Ministry, being the Chief Nursing Administrator in hospitals or in other types of health care facilities. - See that the FSIL staff and students are instrumental in transforming the health care of one community in terms of clean water, sanitation, immunizations, maternal and child health and good nutrition.
- Maintain the existing physical plant in good condition with yearly maintenance programs and continue with plans for capital improvements.
- Plan developing a Master of Science programs to educate Nurse Practitioners and Community Health Nurses.
- Design a research project to be conducted in Haiti.
